How to Clean Wrestling Shoes (and Kill the Smell for Good)

Wrestling shoes take more abuse than any other athletic shoe: daily sweat, mat cleaner residue, skin oils and zero airflow. Clean them wrong and you destroy the sole glue; clean them right and a $150 pair lasts two full seasons and stops smelling like a locker room.

Can you put wrestling shoes in the washing machine?

You can, but only on a cold, gentle cycle inside a mesh laundry bag, with no other laundry, and never in a dryer. Hot water and tumble heat soften the adhesive between the upper and the sole, which is exactly how shoes start to peel at the toe. Hand-washing is safer and takes ten minutes.

The 10-minute hand wash

1) Pull the laces and insoles out and wash them separately. 2) Knock loose grit off the sole with a dry brush. 3) Mix a teaspoon of mild detergent into warm — not hot — water. 4) Scrub the upper with a soft brush in small circles, then do the sole with a stiffer brush. 5) Wipe with a clean damp cloth to remove all soap. 6) Stuff with paper towel and air-dry away from direct heat for 12–24 hours.

Killing odor at the source

Smell is bacteria, not dirt. After drying, sprinkle baking soda inside and leave it overnight, then shake it out. For stubborn cases, a 50/50 white vinegar and water spray inside the shoe kills the bacteria and evaporates odorless. Avoid bleach — it degrades the mesh and yellows white uppers.

Keeping the sole grippy

Grip loss is usually a film of mat cleaner, dust and skin oil, not worn rubber. Wipe the sole with a damp cloth before every match — this restores most of the bite. Never wear your wrestling shoes outdoors: sidewalk grit polishes the rubber and grinds the tread flat faster than a whole season on the mat.

Drying and storage

Never use a radiator, hair dryer or dryer. Stuff with paper towel, change it after an hour, and let air do the work. Store shoes outside the gym bag so they can breathe — a sealed bag is a bacteria incubator. Rotating two pairs during heavy training weeks doubles the lifespan of both.

When to replace them

Replace when the sole tread is visibly smooth in the ball-of-foot zone, the upper has stretched enough that your heel slips, or the toe cap has worn through. Most wrestlers get one competitive season out of a daily-use pair; keeping a dedicated competition pair for tournaments only stretches that to two or three.

How often should I clean wrestling shoes?

Wipe the soles after every session, air them out daily, and do a full wash every two to three weeks during season — more if you sweat heavily.
