High-Top vs Low-Top Wrestling Shoes: Which One Is Right for You?

The single biggest fit decision you'll make when buying a wrestling shoe: high-top or low-top. Neither is universally better — they're built for different bodies and different styles. Here's how to pick.

Choose a high-top if…

You've ever rolled an ankle. You wrestle heavier weight classes (170+). You ride legs and get twisted up in par terre. You're a first-year wrestler still learning stance safety. The in Obsidian / Gold is the pick — the collar wraps the joint like a boot without adding a full ounce.

Choose a low-top if…

You freestyle, throw, and pivot constantly. You wrestle lighter weight classes (145 and under) where every ounce shows. Your ankles are strong and you want maximum range of motion for shots and sprawls. The in Toxic Green / Black is the lightest low-top in our lineup.

The middle ground

Most mid-cut shoes give you 70% of a high-top's ankle wrap with 90% of a low-top's mobility. If you're on the fence, start here.

Youth wrestlers — always high-top

Ankles under age 14 aren't done developing. High-top shoes with an internal strap protect the joint through the awkward-technique years. The runs down to a youth 5.

Bottom line

History of ankle problems → high-top. Freestyle / lighter weight class → low-top. Not sure → mid-cut. Still not sure? Email us your weight class and injury history and we'll pick for you.
